University Place Elementary selected as a “Super School”
University Place Elementary received special recognition as a “Super School” from Imagine Nation, a recognition program that celebrates schools for their outstanding dedication to giving their students the best in language and literacy instruction. University Place is one of only 25 schools across the nation to receive the honor for this year. Ms. Dollie Jackson oversees the Imagine Learning program.

ALABAMA STUDENTS NATIONAL MEDAL WINNERS AT 2012 SKILLSUSA CHAMPIONSHIPS
July 2012 - Top Alabama students traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, and participated in exciting national competitions at the 2012 SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference and Championships, June 23-27. This year, more than 5,600 students from across America participated in the national SkillsUSA championships.
Working against a time clock, and also other competitors, students proved their expertise in high-skilled career areas such as technical drafting, precision machining, medical assisting, electronics, technology, and culinary arts.
Alabama had 114 students to participate in the national championships this year. Of these, exactly 90 made it to the final championship round (in their individual contest area). When all contests had ended, exactly 44 Alabama students finished in the national top ten!
SkillsUSA is a dynamic organization devoted to preparing students for careers in technical, skilled, and service occupations. It serves over 300,000 high school, college, and professional members nationwide. Alabama has approximately 9,000 members.
The national championships is sponsored annually to recognize the achievements of students and to encourage them to strive for excellence in their chosen occupations.

Northwest Huntsville: Back To School Parade
The Northwest Cluster of PTSA celebrated its 25th Annual Back to School Parade and Festival. The parade included school organizations, social clubs, marching bands, cheerleaders, area residents and city officials. They marched from Blue Spring Road and ended on the campus of Johnson High School. The festival is hosted every year to promote educational excellence throughout the city of Huntsville and to educate parents on how to support their child's personal development with a healthy dose of interactive fun, games, entertainment, and food.

Among the 2012 U.S. News Best High Schools in Alabama, 3 were awarded gold medals, 17 received silver medals, and 73 were considered bronze medal schools. To be eligible for a state ranking, a school must be awarded a national gold or silver medal.
