Welcome to the Huntsville City School System

Within every child, wonderful possibilities are waiting to be fulfilled. Huntsville City Schools combine an outstanding core curriculum with advanced learning opportunities and innovative magnet schools to help students develop their talents to the fullest. All Huntsville schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges. Extensive extracurricular activities and after school programs add to the learning experience.

A Solid Foundation
Beginning with the basics of a 4x4 curriculum, high school students in Huntsville City Schools study four years of English language, mathematics, science and social studies. Two years of foreign language study are another fundamental that helps to prepare them for life in tomorrow’s world.

Advanced Learning Programs
Through the Toyota Distance Learning Labs, Huntsville students can choose from a broader range of courses, even when the classroom is on a different campus. Distance learning also brings guest lecturers to add their expertise in everything from contemporary literature to medical concepts. Advanced Placement® courses in English, math, science, social studies and art allow students to prepare for college and earn college credits.

Johnson High School's Magnet Programs

International Studies
Johnson High School’s International Education Magnet Program is over 20 years old. The program adds classes as interests and priorities change over the years. Students accepted into the program must maintain a core curriculum average of a minimum 75%. All Magnet students must complete 4 years of Russian or German language (taught by native speakers).
The goal of the International Education Magnet Program is to assist students in developing a global perspective, attaining skills needed to function in the international market place, and learning to communicate with people of other cultures. Enrollment is by application and personal interview. Application forms are available in the Johnson High guidance office.

Law Academy
Johnson High School’s Law Academy Magnet Program explore the justice system and legal professions from law enforcement to the Federal Court. Basic civil and criminal law as well as, opportunities for employment are explored in Law and Society I. Students learn how to speak in public forums and observe court room etiquette. Second year students study, Historical Background of Civil Liberties, which is law in action. Students attend court; observe court officers, law enforcement officers, legal reporters, lawyers, and judges. Third year students learn to conduct legal research and speak in front of groups; they also become eligible for an internship with a local attorney. Law and Society II - Constitutional Law offers students the opportunity to test their critical thinking skills in moot courts, mock congressional hearings, and serious competition with other schools.

Lee High School's Magnet Programs

Creative & Performing Arts
Lee High School’s Creative & Performing Arts Magnet has received many awards and recognition for its programs in visual arts, vocal music, creative writing, dance, orchestra, theatre performance, photography/video, video/broadcast journalism and technical theatre production. Students develop a strong base for building their future education and/or a career in the arts. Enrollment is by application and interview, audition, or portfolio.

Engineering Magnet
Lee High School's Engineering Magnet prepares students for college-level programs in engineering. Through teaching and practice, it integrates technical and academic skills. Enrollment is based on the student’s grades in previous math courses, application and interview.  Lee Magnet students benefit greatly from the diversity and creativity of its student body.  This diversity makes our graduates invaluable to future employers because their diverse backgrounds and points of view improve students’ critical thinking skills and encourage creative thinking and problem solving in our increasingly diverse world. 

Academy for Academics and Arts
The Academy for Academics and Arts (AAA) is a magnet school that serve students in grades K-8. The Academy for Academics and Arts offers special programs in academics and arts. It is designed to provide an atmosphere in which a student can develop individual talents and interest, while mastering basic skills. Creativity is encouraged and guided by a staff of qualified educators who were selected because of their demonstrated ability to provide for individual needs as well as their expertise and interest in the arts. Classes are offered in visual arts, drama, stringed instruments, piano, vocal music, creative movement and creative writing. Students are introduced to all of these art forms with opportunities for specialization. Many guest artists perform and conduct classes.

Academy for Science and Foreign Language
The Academy for Science and Foreign Language (ASFL) is a magnet school that serves students in grades K-8.  ASFL offers a curriculum that is designed to enrich students through enhanced opportunities to explore the sciences, and to communicate ideas to a global community through the study of languages such as Spanish, French, German, and Russian.  The International Baccalaureate Programme at ASFL is recognized throughout the world as a challenging program that embraces international mindedness and communication so that our students will grow to be responsible, respected, and successful adults anywhere in the world.  Because of our magnet program and our International Baccalaureate Programme, we are able to draw students from all over the city of Huntsville, allowing for a rich, diverse population in the school.  The opportunities for study in science and foreign language from Kindergarten through 8th grade coupled with the IB program and its global perspectives make it easy for ASFL to mirror the diverse population of the city, as we have parents from many cultures, races, and ethnicities seeking a spot for their child.

Technology Magnet Programs

New Century Technology High School offers students an opportunity to team with local industry leaders. Certified teachers instruct through an approach that emphasizes team problem solving and hands-on work. Enrollment is approved through an application process.

J.E. Williams Technology Middle School, a School of Choice program gives middle school students an opportunity to explore the world of technology. Working closely with local business leaders, students are exposed to the many aspects of the technology industry.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) offers high quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools. Huntsville City Schools has IB Programs at Columbia High School and Academy for Science and Foreign Language.

Military Training
Junior Reserve Officer Training (ROTC) programs are offered through our high schools. Students can participate in the Army program at Columbia, Grissom and Lee High Schools, the Marine ROTC at J.O. Johnson High School, or the Air Force program through S. R. Butler and Huntsville High School. Many ROTC students continue their training with careers in the military after graduation.

After School & Special Programs
Huntsville City Schools provide convenient extended day care at a rate comparable to other childcare facilities. Many Title 1 schools also have an after-school enrichment program, Camp Success, to assist students with homework, reading, and other activities. Programs such as RAMBO, Homebound, and night school allow students to make-up missed classes and homework.

The Fletcher E. Seldon Center assists students who are struggling in school or have discipline issues. Students can maintain their grade status and receive promotion or graduate with their class. To round out academic life and learning, the school system offers a broad range of extracurricular activities. Sports, academic interest groups and the fine arts enrich the educational experience and allow students to explore their talents and learn more about themselves as they prepare for the future.
