Doug Martinson is a product of the Huntsville City School system. He attended Chapman and Jones Valley Elementary Schools; Whitesburg Middle School; and was the third generation of his family to graduate from Huntsville High School in 1982.
He received a B.S. Degree in Corporate Finance and Investment Management in 1986 from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. His legal education was at Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Virginia where he received a Juris Doctor in 1989. He was graduated from Boston University School of Law with an LL.M in Taxation in June of 1990.
He is married to the former Lauren Burlison. Lauren is a 1988 graduate of Huntsville High School, a 1992 graduate of Vanderbilt University and received a Masters in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia in 1994. Lauren is the Director of Public Relations for the Huntsville Public Library. She was previously employed as Assistant Director of the Volunteer Center, as Director of Development and Public Relations for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, as Office Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters/Big Sisters and at the Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of the Junior League and was Chair of the Ready to Learn Committee. They have two boys, Clay who attends Jones Valley Elementary School and Reed, who is in pre-school at First United Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Martinson was admitted to the Alabama Bar Association in 1989; the Washington, D.C. Bar in 1991; the U.S. District Court in 1991; the U.S. Tax Court in 1991; and is admitted to practice before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
He is Town Attorney for the Town of Triana; Assistant Town Attorney for the Town of New Hope; and served on the Executive Committee and as Secretary of the Madison County Bar Association. He has served as President of the Madison County Young Lawyers Association.
He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Huntsville where he has served as Chairman of the Foundation, is a board member, and is President-Elect for 2006-07. He has also served as a mentor at Butler High School.
He is the Huntsville Chairman for the University of Alabama Commerce Executive Society, which raises money for the Business School at the University. He is a member and has served as President of the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Huntsville. He has served on the Executive Committee of Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama and also as a Big Brother in the program. In 1995, he served as President of the Board of Kids’ Space Playground during the construction phase of the community playground. He is on the Board of Directors for the Madison/Marshall Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross. Mr. Martinson is on the Board of Directors of Partnership for Drug Free America and has served as a Judge for the Teen Court in the Huntsville City Schools.
He has coached, played and refereed youth ice hockey since 1972. He is also a certified ice hockey referee and referees in the youth levels up to NCAA Division I. He was appointed by Mayor Spencer to the Board of Control of the Huntsville Municipal Ice Complex.
He also served as a member and as Vice-Chairman of the Huntsville Public Library Foundation which bring in authors for the Vive le Livre Fundraiser.
He grew up in First Baptist Church and joined his wife’s church, First United Methodist Church after their marriage in 1995. He served as Chairman of the Board of the First United Methodist Church’s Day Care, the Susanna Wesley Early Education Ministry, taught Sunday school at the high school level and served as a Methodist Youth Fellowship Counselor.
Honors which Mr. Martinson received at the University of Alabama include the Dean's List; Jason's (24 Member Senior Men's Honorary); Omicron Delta Kappa; Anderson Society (Service Honorary); Order of Omega (Greek Honorary); Financial Management Association (National Honor Society); William Dunn Memorial Award (Best Active member Phi Gamma Delta Social Fraternity); William Handley Scholarship (Fraternity); J.W. Palmer Insurance Scholarship; Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation Scholarship; Corresponding Secretary of Phi Gamma Delta.
His law school activities were President, Student Bar Association, which made him the Judge in any open Honor trials for violations of the Honor Code; Chairman, Legal Research Association; Student-to-Student Tutoring where he tutored for two years at an elementary school in Lexington, Virginia; American Jurisprudence Award: Legal Research; Delegate 1988 ABA Convention, Toronto; Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Voluntary Income Tax Assistance; Who's Who Among American Law Students; member of the Student Conduct Committee; Phi Delta Phi;.
His law practice concentrates on estate planning, probate, corporate, municipal law, appellate practice, business litigation and contracts.
