        Elements and Principles Lesson Plans

        • Line: Continuous Line Mural Lines are straight or curvy with a beginning and an end.  Drawing and coloring line designs in sections and connecting them into one big line.
        • Shape Straight line shapes are geometric.  Curvy line shapes are organic.  A collage drawing, cutting, and gluing shapes.
        • Space Size and overlapping can create space.  Different sized shapes used to illustrate simple perspective.
        • Value can be used to show distance.  Mixing paint to create different color values.  Using a lighter and darker value to enhance an interesting 3-D shape.
        • Color Primary colors mixed to make secondary colors.  Mixing paint colors to be used next time.
        • Putting It All Together! Fruit and vegetable shapes cut out of painted paper to create a still life composition.
        • Texture Quilt Texture can be seen or touched.  Making a collage with wallpaper and texture rubbings.
        • Unity: Stained Glass Elements can be used to achieve unity in a composition.  Using strong black line to create unity.
        • Balance Symmetrical and asymmetrical balance.  Creating balance with Matisse-style cut-outs.
        • Repetition and Pattern Pattern made through repeating shapes.  Printmaking techniques used to create a pattern.
        • Shape Using shape stamps to create space robots.
        • Contrast Contrast achieved through the use of warm and cool colors.
        • Rhythm Rhythm created through patterns of shape and color.  Paper molas from Panama.
        • Movement Elements and principles create movement in a composition.  Stencil letters are used to illustrate movement.
        • Emphasis Add an odd element to create emphasis.
