Course requirements

Spanish II

 

              I.      Perquisites and Standards:

Ä       Spanish I

Ä       Assessment by the teacher

Ä       Understanding verb conjugations and basic Spanish vocabulary.

Ä       A basic knowledge of Spanish and English grammar

Ä       Memorization of vast vocabulary as well as present, past, and future tenses.

Ä       Construct sentences, and write paragraphs.

 

            II.      Objectives of the course:

Ä       Students will continue to develop communication skills in Spanish and become more proficient in listening, reading, speaking and writing in Spanish and in the knowledge of the culture of Spanish speaking countries.

 

          III.      Functional skills and knowledge:

Students will:

Ä       use appropriate idiomatic expression needed for everyday topics.

Ä       understand verb conjugations.

Ä       memorize vocabulary.

Ä       construct sentences.

Ä       write paragraphs, using the correct part of speech

 

         IV.      Textbook:  En Español 2, 2000,McDougal Littel

Notebook: En Español (Second year)

 

           V.      Students are expected to:

Ä       Be on time

Ä       Be prepared (have book, pen/pencil, notebook with paper and handouts/notes, and completed assignment)

Ä       Participate

Ä       Cooperate

Ä       Treat others and their property with respect

 

         VI.      Needed Supplies:

Ä             Students need a three-ring binder with a pocket for this class.  We will have lots of handouts which you are to keep in your notebook.  You need to bring this notebook to class with you every day.  Keep it organized.  Also, you will need to make sure to have lined notebook paper with you each day (at least 2-3 pages per day).

 

       VII.      Grading/Assessments:

Ä      Cumulative point system, i.e.  Points earned ÷ possible points = grade

Ä       Grades will be based on speaking points/class participation, assignments, vocabulary quizzes, etapa  

        quizzes, unit tests, and various projects.

Ä       Frequent vocabulary quizzes will be given.  It is your responsibility to prepare for these quizzes. 

Ä       Speaking Points/Class Participation points will be awarded for oral participation in Spanish.  Lots of opportunities will be given to earn speaking points.  Likewise, points can be lost by coming to class without book, paper, pen, etc. or by disruptive behavior that hinders learning in the classroom.

Ä       Make up tests are given before school never during class.  Students have the responsibility for

       scheduling makeup tests promptly.  Students should arrive at 7:10

Ø       Comprehensive exams are given at the end of each semester, counting as 1/5 of semester grade.

 

     VIII.      Course content:

Class is conducted in Spanish to improve the students’ ability to comprehend the spoken language

 

Ø   Vocabulary, grammar, and reading      

Ø   Direct, indirect, and double object pronouns

Ø   Irregular preterite verbs

Ø   Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns

Ø   Stem-changing preterit verbs

Ø   Adjectives  of nationality

Ø   Possessive adjectives and pronouns

Ø   Reflexive pronouns and verbs

Ø   Asking for information and opinions

Ø             imperfect tense

Ø             Describing people and things

Ø             Progressive tenses

Ø             Commands

Ø             Negative sentence

Ø             Comparative and superlatives

Ø             Expressions with tener

Ø             Number 1 – 1,000.000

Ø             School/studying

 

 

*         A major project on Spanish painters.  The students will research and learn about the importance of art in Spanish speaking countries.

 

*         In addition to the text we will be viewing a video series entitled La Catrina.  The students will keep a journal of events, vocabulary and expressions.  The purpose of these series is to increase comprehension and exposure to the language.

           X.      Attendance Policy

Successful language learning requires constant practice of the language. It is essential that students attend class in order to receive maximum exposure to the language and to participate actively on a regular basis. 

Ä     The HSV city school Board attendance policy is followed.

        All requests for accommodation are welcome, from students and parents.

 

X. Keys to Success in Spanish

Ä     Be on time and prepared for the day’s activities.

Ä     Participate in class discussions and activities in Spanish.

Ä     Keep notebook with clean paper.

Ä     Hand in assignments on time.

Ä     Be courteous and respectful at all times.

Ä     Ask questions.  Do not hesitate to see teacher privately for extra help.

Ä     Take risks.  Mistakes are common in a foreign language.  That’s how we learn.

AP Spanish IV, V and Tutors

 

I. Prerequisites and Standards

Basic pre-requisite is to have attended three years of Spanish.

       Objectives of the course

Ø      To help students increase their proficiency in oral

Ø      Communication (listening and speaking) in Spanish.

Ø      To help students develop the ability to write correctly in Spanish.

Ø      The ability to compose expository passages in Spanish.

Ø      The ability to use Spanish to express ideas orally with accuracy

     and fluency and to participate actively in discussions.

 

II. Materials and Texts

Ø      Textbook:  AVANZANDO, 2003, John Wiley & Son. 5th edition -          

                      Chapters 1-10, and Readings.           

Ø      Handouts:  Spanish Conversation and Composition

 

III. Papers and Projects

Ø      Various Spanish literature works will be read and discussed in class both verbally and in writing.

 

IV. Tests

Ø      Major tests are always announced at least 2 days before the test date.

Ø      Major tests must be made up within 2 weeks.

 

V. Grading

VI. Course Content

        A.  Conversations, class discussions, oral interviews, and other types

of speaking activities based on the textbook, as well as on other

materials or topics selected by the instructor and/or the students.

 

  B. Class is conducted in Spanish to improve the students’ ability to                       

     comprehend the spoken language.

    Students listen to additional tapes and take practice tests to ensure   

    comprehension.   

 

  C.  Vocabulary, grammar, and reading

     Students will keep a running list of all new vocabulary words.                            

     Students will write sentences using words from the new vocabulary

     Writing practice, once a week compositions on topics selected  

     by teacher.  Compositions should be about 200 words. 

     First draft is returned with errors indicated with symbols. 

     Students are to make corrections and submit both the original and

     revised copy on the due date. The first grade received is the result of   

     the first evaluation plus additional points for improvement.

Biographical Information

I have been teaching at Grissom since 1995-present. I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from University of Texas at El Paso, (UTEP) and Spanish certification from Auburn University and graduate courses from UAH, Athens University and Alabama A & M.

 

Personal Interests

·          Travel, reading, knitting and painting.

·          Being with friends and family

·          Teaching Spanish to my grandson
