Academic Essential Functions:
Literature
The student:
1. will read selections in American literature from the beginnings to 1900, with emphasis on important authors, the types and styles of writing (ex. Puritan), and influences and movements (ex. Romantic);
2. will interpret passages and discuss content and meaning;
3. will recognize short story, novel, play, and poetry elements;
4. will increase vocabulary through reading, worksheets, and/or focus words in the literature book;
5. will read and demonstrate an understanding of Julius Caesar and the style of William Shakespeare;
6. will read and demonstrate an understanding of the Arthurian legend;
7. will read summer reading book (To Kill a Mockingbird), and six other novels during the school year;
8. will prepare for the reading portion of the AHSGE.
Grammar
The student:
1. will demonstrate a knowledge of parts of speech, parts of the sentence, phrases, clauses, pronoun usage, agreement, modifiers, common usage problems, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation;
2. will practice this knowledge in writing assignments.
Writing
The student:
1. will learn format of the five-paragraph essay (introduction with thesis statement, three body paragraphs that support the thesis, and the conclusion);
2. will write at least three essays/papers each semester that demonstrate an understanding of this format, as well as the mechanics of writing (ex. sentence and paragraph structure, parallelism, redundancy, and clarity);
3. write an analytical term paper that will demonstrate an understanding of note card and bibliography card format, the title page, the parallel outline with thesis, the body of the paper, the procedure for using and citing both direct and indirect quotes from critical sources, and the Works Cited page;
4. will demonstrate an understanding of expository, narrative, persuasive, and descriptive writing and the writing prompts in preparation for the tenth grade writing assessment.
Speaking
The student will practice public speaking through one or more of the following: class presentations, skits, oral readings, and memorizations.
Career Education
The student will explore career possibilities through one or more assignments.
Student Behavior
The student:
1. will bring necessary books and supplies to class;
2. will listen to class readings, discussions, explanations, and instructions;
3. will study for understanding and assessment;
4. will complete all assignments on time and as instructed;
5.
will exhibit appropriate
behavior to classmates and the teacher.
