Senior Packet
For the Class of 2010
Before Ms. Hall or Mrs. Cagle can write a recommendation for you, you need to complete the senior packet.
When Should You Apply to Colleges?
We hope that you have already made college visits and chosen the colleges to which you will apply. If you still need to visit colleges, check information under MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR COLLEGE VISIT which is posted on the Grissom web site. Be sure to call or e-mail at least a week in advance to schedule appointments for college tours and information sessions. Many colleges will also schedule an appointment for you and your family with an admissions counselor. Don't forget to write thank you notes to student guides and admission counselors after your visit.
Some public universities in Alabama urge you to apply as soon as your junior year grades have been posted in early June. Do not wait to apply until you have retaken the ACT or SAT in October. Those scores will be added to your admissions file as soon as they are electronically transmitted to the school.
On-line Applications – Most colleges update their on-line applications during the summer. The web sites are usually set up so you can also download the application as a PDF file and print it out. If you have computer problems, see Mrs. Sumrall for assistance.
Paper Applications to Mail – the Grissom Guidance Department receives few application forms before mid-September. The admissions reps who attend college day will leave them for us, along with their brochures. However, you can get applications mailed to your home anytime by calling the specific college and requesting them.
Fees – An application fee of $25 - $60 will be required at the time of application. The amount of the fee depends on the school. Other fees such as a housing deposit may also be required.
Remember – whether you send your application via the internet or snail mail, you must have your transcript mailed to the college from Grissom . Most colleges require you to have your ACT or SAT scores sent directly from the testing service. Normally, you list your college choices when you register to take the ACT or SAT. If you did not, you can have additional score reports sent by requesting this service on-line or with a mail-in form, which is available in the Guidance Office.
How Do You Have an Official Transcript Sent?
For information on sending transcripts please visit the transcript page.
How Do You Request a Teacher Recommendation?
Give your teachers as much time as possible when you ask them to complete an admissions recommendation form or write a scholarship recommendation letter. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least two weeks prior to the deadline for the recommendation to be completed. Be sure to provide your resume (see the resume information at the Grissom Countdown to College website.) Provide the teacher with a properly addressed envelope including the correct postage.
What Are My GPA and Class Rank?
Your GPA and Class Rank are available from Mrs. Cagle – some applications and college admissions counselors will ask you to report these numbers. Rank and GPA are officially updated at the end of junior and the end of senior years. An unofficial midyear rank will be available in January.Help Your Counselors Save Valuable Time!
